Lighten Your Hair At Home (Without The Damage)

When we hear about hair lightening, we always think of bleach and irreversible damage that requires a hefty investment in products to keep the hair from breaking off. If you have fine, thin, healthy hair and you just want sun-kissed highlights, I gotchu.

As someone who has fine hair, it’s so important to me that I keep the integrity and health of my hair. I love my natural hair color, and like that it naturally lightens in the sun, so in this video tutorial I show you how to lighten your hair at home using just a permanent hair color (yes, you can use box dye — but please read the instructions).

In this video I use a 9NN hair color from Joico Lumishine. A 9NN is “natural natural”, meant to cover grays. Level 9 is blonde. My natural hair color is between a 5 and 6. It has been lightening nicely in the sun this summer so it was becoming more of a level 6.

In hair color, level 6 is darker than 9. The levels go from 1 (blackest black) to 10 (blondest blonde).

Permanent hair color removes pigment and deposits the color at the same time. It also makes hair super shiny. I love this line when I use it on my clients who need gray coverage.

Bleach, on the other hand, removes pigment and exposes the underlying pigment, which is usually the dreaded warmth. That’s when we have to mix up a toner to counteract the warmth and deposit the color we want to see.

As we wash our hair, the color will fade and we will have to re-tone the bleached hair.

Permanent hair color is a quick, easy option you can use if your hair is healthy, light in color and has no pre-existing color on it. My hair was all natural.
