5 Ways To Get Real Volume In Your Hair

Flat hair is no fun. You can’t do much with it and it falls limp on your scalp with no movement or life. Styling it is even harder. Finding the perfect product or service to get big volume sometimes feels like an impossible task. Besides blowdrying our hair with volumizing mousse, do we have any other options? We do! Here are 5 options that can give you real results and massive volume.

  1. A haircut with lots of crown layers, like a shag or The Rachel

Adding more crown layers to your haircut will give that extra oomph and keep your hair from falling flat. If your hair is really long, gravity will pull it down and it may be more difficult to get the bouncy layers you want. With a shag, or shag-inspired cut that has lots of shorter crown layers, you can have lots of volume at the top while keeping your length.

2. A powder product or dry shampoo

This is the most common go-to for volume. I've used a lot, and I stay away from drugstore dry shampoos.
The Hairstory Powder is hands down the best powder I've used for daily use. It doesn't feel grimy or leave build-up the way most dry shampoos do. The powders hairstylists use for updos are very strong and sticky. They're great for when you don't want hair that moves.

A popular one amongst hairstylists is the one that looks like a salt shaker: Redken, Sexy Hair, Aveda, Got2B and almost every other haircare brand carries one. These tend to be ultra strong and are used mostly for updos and when you want your hair to stay put.

3. Bleaching your hair

Going bonde fattens the hair by swelling up the hair itself, damages the cuticle and roughens up the hair, making it appear thicker and fuller. If you don't want to go fully blonde, you can get soft highlights and go a few levels lighter than your natural color.

4. Getting a root lift perm

This is a perm that's placed at the root to lift the root.

I personally don't like doing them because I don't want to inhale the chemicals, but I know of a lot of Asian salons that offer this service, and I have to say I highly recommend it if you've tried everything and you want something more long-lasting.

Just please wear a mask.

5. Crimping your hair at the root

This little trick is so common amongst bridal stylists. When hair is thin, we crimp it a couple inches off the crown with a 1-inch crimping iron and that trick gives the best lift.

Hide the crimp with the rest of the hair so no one can see the actual crimps.

Add powder or dry shampoo, and you're good to go!
